Dans les années 1960 la ville connaît une extension considérable sous l'impulsion de son maire Jacques Duhamel. De nouveaux quartiers sont créés surtout en direction de l'ouest. Un concours d'architectes fut lancé en 1960 pour la construction d'un ensemble paroissial sur le thème de St-Jean, la charité envers Dieu, la charité envers le prochain avec une référence à l'Apocalypse. En 1964 l'église Saint-Jean l'Evangéliste conçue par Anton Korady sur un projet tout à fait original et audacieux est consacrée par le cardinal Bertoli, nonce apostolique. Un arc en béton soutient tout l'édifice en même temps que la toiture dont la forme souple évoque tout à la fois des mains jointes, une voile gonflée par la brise, ou encore une tente... L'ancrage de l'ensemble repose uniquement sur deux points. Il n'y a donc pas de murs à proprement parler et la limite de l'édifice est matérialisée par des vitrages translucides ornés de grilles en fer forgé créées et réalisées par Maurice Calka (1921-1999), Premier Grand Prix de Rome en 1950, d'après des thèmes de l'Apocalypse de Saint-Jean. C'est à l'abbé Jean Dole que l'on doit la mise en oeuvre et la réalisation de ce chef d'oeuvre d'art religieux contemporain.

After 1960, the city extended considerably westward according to the will of the mayor Jacques Duhamel. A contest of architects was launched in 1960 for the edification of a parish compound on the theme of charity toward God, charity toward the neighbour with a reference to the Apocalypse. St John's church was inaugurated in 1964 by the Papal Nuncio cardinal Bertoli. The church was built after Anton Korady's original and somewhat daring scheme for the time. An arch in concrete holds the whole construction in addition to a bent roof suggesting two hands joined in prayer, or a wind-filled sail or a tent as well...The structure rests on two points only. Consequently there are no walls so to speak, the limits of the building consist of semi-transparent glass windows adorned with iron gratings designed and made by Maurice Calka (1921-1999),Premier Grand Prix de Rome in 1950, which illustrate themes from the Apocalypse according to St John. Father Jean Dole must be thanked for carrying on the scheme of this outstanding masterpiece of contemporary religious art.
